The annual Mark Province of Kent Burns Supper and Disco was held in the Heart of Kent function suite at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel on Saturday 30th January, in support of the Kent Mark 2020 Festival for the Mark Benevolent Fund. The event was tinged with great sadness as, only two days earlier, the Province had lost VW Bro. Bill Balderston, Provincial Grand Secretary, who had become a much valued friend to all. We missed him not being there.

W Bro. Ray Collings excelled again with the organisation of the evening, so much so, that the numbers this year had increased to an incredible 170. This is a wonderful occasion now and reflects extremely well on all the hard work and determination on W Bro. Ray’s part.

The event started in traditional fashion with guests being welcomed by the sound of the bagpipes as they mingled in the reception area, prior to taking their seats for the evening.

Amongst all the traditional activities, the Toast tae the Lassies was delivered with great aplomb by W Bro. Fred Brown, APGM, to which an equally delightful response was given by Ms Maggie Wyatt.

As ever, the primary aim of the evening was to show that the Mark Degree really is the fun Degree and all present appeared to agree that this was amply demonstrated. The secondary aim was, of course, to support the 2020 Festival. With a raffle supported by two auctions – firstly, three knitted Scotsmen and secondly, two Teddies for Loving Care bears - the evening raised a total of £2,416 towards the 2020 Festival.

As before, the evening would not have been complete without some Scottish dancing. Following a display of dancing skill, the Orpington and District Caledonian Society once again encouraged guests to fill the dance floor. Afterwards, the disco continued until 1am, when many tired and happy revellers retired to their rooms, already looking forward to next year!

The list of everyone, who helped, would be too long to produce here but grateful thanks are extended to everyone, who helped make the event a success – you know who you are!

RW Bro. Archie Torrance PGM said: “We all enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Heart of Kent function suite for our annual Burns Night on 30th January. The occasion was filled with fun and laughter. To have raised just under £2,500 in one event is an outstanding effort and I am grateful to everyone for their generosity. I genuinely believe that we now have a model event that can stand the test of time. I have no hesitation, therefore, in giving my full support to Ray Collings and his team for another event in 2017.”
