WBro Peter Laker MBE is Area Fundraising Manager for the 2020 Festival for Area 2 Lodges. Peter decided to look for a fun and innovative way to raise money and put on an enjoyable event. After some thought, he decided to organise a 10 mile sponsored walk around the outskirts of Canterbury.

Had the weather not been kind, the event could have been very difficult but, on 5 June 2016, an intrepid band of walkers set off from Toddlers Cove in Canterbury to follow a 10 mile route around the River Stour to Chartham and back in the bright sunshine of a hot summer's day. 10 miles appeared to be a somewhat daunting challenge at the beginning but, as the walkers began to enjoy the uplifting peace and serenity of the Kent countryside, a renewed vigour was found and even the Provincial Charity Steward, not known for his resilience, managed to stay the distance and complete the full 10 mile course.

The effort of the walkers and the generosity of their sponsors proved to be truly staggering. The total sum raised through sponsorship totalled £2,621.00. With gift aid added, this will exceed £3,000! This was the result of a tremendous effort by WBro Peter Laker, who has shown that fundraising can be fun as well as being successful. The message is clear, if you organise an event, you can involve family and friends, help to further build your team, have fun and raise funds for the 2020 Festival!

The pictures show the beauty of the countryside on the route and the intrepid band of walkers and supporters at the end, showing a slightly footsore Provincial Grand Master together with the Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Assistant Provincial Grand Master, WBro Fred Brown. WBro Peter Laker can be seen first left by the roll up banner, reflecting happily upon the success of the afternoon.

Many thanks to Martin Jones for taking the group picture.
