W.Bro Brian Ward of the Amherst Mark lodge No 266 and his wife Toni were delighted to organise and welcome 150 people to their home in Folkestone on the 28th August to host a fund raising BBQ in support of the 2020 Festival. The afternoon was dry and warm with occasional glimpses of sun which allowed everyone to relax and enjoy a fun packed afternoon with music provided by ‘Where’s Brian’, who gave their services for free.

W.Bro’s Bob Preston and Don Arter slaved over hot BBQ’s to provide sausages, burgers and chicken to compliment the monstrous amount of mouth-watering food prepared by Toni. This food was washed down with copious quantities of wine, beer and soft drinks (someone has to drive!) all included in the cost of the £10 ticket to leave the revellers susceptible to entering quizzes and amenable to buying raffle tickets so expertly sold by Bro’s Barrie Routledge and Jim Wells. The culmination of the raffle, quizzes, ticket money and sponsorship enabled the event to raise just over £4,000. A marvellous achievement that warrants a big thank you to all the sponsors of the event. These included, Folkestone Taxis, Stretton & Lang Builders Ltd, Well Secured, Jooles Meyer Catering, John Colbert Carpets, Iain Radford Electrical Contractors and Lighting, Matchams Gas Services, Keith Taite Tree Surgeon, The White Lion at Tenterden, Folkestone Sports Centre, Morrisons, Givaudan, Snip-Pets Dog Groomers and ARM Window Cleaning Services.

Additionally a very special thank you must go to Mrs Sheila Santer who donated a substantial sum of money to the BBQ in support of the 2020 Festival and ultimately the Hope for Tomorrow Charity in memory of her daughter Belinda who succumbed to cancer. This donation will entitle Sheila to receive a Gold Grand Patron Jewel for ladies from the Mark Benevolent Fund.

As the afternoon neared its end W.Bro Jon Meyer, the Charity Steward for the Lodge took a moment to thank everyone for attending and supporting the event, particularly the band ‘Where’s Brian’ and all of the sponsors. He then gave a very special thank you to Toni Ward for the glorious selection of food she had prepared. This received a thunderous round of applause. Jon then asked the PGM’s wife Maggie to receive a bunch of flowers on behalf of the Lodge and then called on the Provincial Grand Master R.W. Bro Archie Torrance to receive a cheque for £4,000 in favour of the 2020 Festival mentioning that this amount would more than qualify the Lodge for the Platinum Festival Award.

The PGM said he was astonished at the amount of money raised from the BBQ and would be delighted to receive a cheque on behalf of the Province in favour of the 2020 Festival. He then took a moment to talk about some of the worthy causes that the MBF supports particularly mentioning the Hope for Tomorrow Charity and the great service this provides. Finally he thanked W.Bro Brian Ward and his wife Toni for organising such a successful event and asked Toni to receive a bunch of flowers on behalf of the Province in recognition of all of her hard work. The PGM then said he looked forward to presenting the Platinum Festival Award to The Amherst Mark Lodge at the Provincial Meeting in Bromley on the 24th September in recognition of all their hard work and support for the 2020 Festival.

In conclusion it was agreed that a splendid time was enjoyed by all those who attended the event. The amount of money raised far exceeded the expectations and made all of the hard work organising the event worthwhile. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success.
